Join Scenic Hudson, the design team, and the Quassaick Creek Greenway Steering Committee on Saturday January 28 from 10am-2pm at the Amory for a public forum of the Quassaick Creek Greenway Feasibility Study.

The Quassaick Creek Greenway [QCG]  is a community project exploring a potential public trail along Quassaick Creek.  Extending from the Hudson River to Crystal Lake, the Greenway will create opportunities for public enjoyment and education, protect the Creek's unique ecosystem, and improve neighborhood access to nature in the city. The project will be gathering ideas from the community, along with research on the cultural, physical and environmental conditions of the Creek.

QCG is a project of Scenic Hudson in collaboration with a steering committee of local community members and representatives from Orange County, Orange County Land Trust, City of Newburgh, Town of New Windsor, and the Quassaick Creek Watershed Alliance.

The Quassaick Creek, as it winds around and through the City of Newburgh, is an extraordinary place that [almost] nobody knows about. It flows through two and a half miles of millponds, over historic dams and under and alongside industrial mill buildings. The middle reach descends through a steep forested gorge. Where it meets the Hudson, it is a tidal estuary.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

the following are a compilation from previous reports, and studies, and include community input during the current 2022 feasibility study.

PRINCIPLE #1: Create safe and inclusive public spaces that strengthen neighborhood

access and residents' connection to the Quassaick Creek.

PRINCIPLE #2: Adopt design and planning strategies that support the ecology of the Creek and improve its biodiversity.

PRINCIPLE #3: Build in resilience to natural disasters and climate change, including the potential for stormwater management, combined sewage overflow, and heat islands.

PRINCIPLE #4: Design spaces that support a range of recreational uses, including walking, running, biking; creek-related activities such as fishing; and reflective uses such as wildlife-viewing.

PRINCIPLE #5: Increase awareness of the creek by ensuring equity in access, and use by a wide array of ages and abilities.

PRINCIPLE #6: Connect the Greenway to places of gathering, including public parks, natural landmarks, and places of work and commerce in communities along the Creek.

PRINCIPLE #7: Explore designs that foster green job creation and increased activity for small businesses.

PRINCIPLE #8: Strengthen connections to existing and proposed regional trail systems to make green mobility a convenient choice for all residents.

PRINCIPLE #9: Establish a management and stewardship structure that ensures long-term sustainability and enjoyment of the Greenway.

PRINCIPLE #10: Honor the history and culture of communities along the Creek through installations and programming that tell the story of the land and its people.
